In a fictional Alpine republic between the wars, a devoted and vain hotel concierge takes a young lobby boy under his wing. A stolen painting, a disputed inheritance and a pursuit across snowy country follow, told as a story within a story, in a meticulously built storybook world.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining work of 2010s auteur cinema, where one director's highly personal visual language met mainstream success, and a late example of the film-as-stylised-homage to Europe's lost interwar culture.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story handed down through several tellers, where the elegant surface is part of how the past is being remembered.
