A lone prospector heads into the Klondike gold rush with nothing but optimism and a very small hat. Hunger, weather, rough company and a hopeful crush on a dance hall girl test the Tramp's gift for improvisation. Comedy and genuine hardship run side by side.
Why it matters in cinema history
One of the great achievements of silent comedy, it showed that a slapstick star could sustain a long, carefully structured narrative with pathos and spectacle, and it set a template for the comic feature.
Watch with intention
Watch how Chaplin makes physical comedy express character: every gag reveals what the Tramp wants, fears or pretends not to feel.
