Two eras of one family are told in alternation. In the 1950s, Michael Corleone tries to secure and expand the family's power beyond New York. Decades earlier, a young immigrant named Vito begins his life in America. A long, sombre, richly staged American saga.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1970s New Hollywood, and the work that proved a studio sequel could be a serious, independent piece of art rather than a repeat of a hit.
Watch with intention
Watch the film as a deliberate comparison between two men, and ask what each scene says about how power is gained and how it is kept.
