Summer, 1900. A shy schoolboy staying at a grand Norfolk country house is drawn into the life of the family and a neighbouring farmer. He becomes their messenger, carrying notes across the estate during a long, oppressive heatwave.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining British art film of the early 1970s. It turned the period costume picture into something cooler and more critical, and it anticipated later heritage cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch how the heat, the polite manners and the unspoken class codes press on a boy who sees everything and understands very little.
