The Garden of the Finzi-Continis
Italian (Il giardino dei Finzi Contini)
1970 · Directed by Vittorio De Sica · 95 min
Ferrara, the late 1930s. A circle of young people, Jewish and not, gathers around a walled estate and its tennis court, while Mussolini's racial laws narrow what Jewish Italians may do. The narrator, a middle-class student, is drawn to the Finzi-Continis' closed world and to their daughter Micòl. The tone is elegiac and restrained.
