American
2022 · Directed by Steven Spielberg · 151 min
A boy in postwar America falls in love with making movies, and the film follows how that obsession grows alongside his family's life in New Jersey, Arizona and California. Warm, funny and observant, it is Steven Spielberg's fictionalised account of his own beginnings.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late-career autobiography from one of the defining directors of modern Hollywood, it belongs to a run of early-2020s films in which veteran filmmakers revisit their formative years.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about how a camera frames experience: notice who is looking, who is being looked at, and what each frame includes.
