Documentary
Japanese (ゆきゆきて、神軍)
1987 · Directed by Kazuo Hara · 122 min
A Japanese veteran of the New Guinea campaign drives through the country in a van covered with slogans, calling on former comrades to ask what happened to two soldiers in his unit. The camera stays at his side as the search grows harder to watch and harder to look away from.
Why it matters in cinema history
It stands as a defining work of postwar Japanese reckoning with wartime memory, and a landmark of documentary that treats the camera as a participant rather than a witness.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of how the camera changes events, and ask where observation ends and participation begins.
