Comedy
French (Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie)
1972 · Directed by Luis Buñuel · 101 min
Six well-dressed friends keep trying to share a meal, and something always gets in the way. Luis Buñuel turns a simple social ritual into a deadpan comic puzzle where politeness never cracks, even as the situations around it become stranger.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining work of European art-house satire in the early 1970s, and the clearest popular statement of Buñuel's surrealist method: reality with the logic quietly removed, played with a straight face.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a comedy of manners in which the rules of politeness stay intact while everything else quietly stops making sense.
