Comedy
French (Le Dîner de cons)
1998 · Directed by Francis Veber · 80 min
Pierre Brochant, a prosperous Paris publisher, belongs to a circle whose weekly dinner has one rule: each guest brings along an "idiot" to be mocked. This week Brochant believes he has found the champion, a mild tax employee who builds models from matchsticks. One apartment, one evening, and a very precisely built farce.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the French stage-to-screen comedy tradition at the end of the century, and the peak of Francis Veber's long run of mismatched-pair comedies built around the character name Pignon.
