In South Boston, a young police recruit is sent deep into an Irish-American crime crew, while a smooth, ambitious officer rises inside the state police with loyalties of his own. Scorsese's crime thriller is fast, profane and tightly wound, built on mistrust and double lives.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining crime film of the 2000s and a prominent example of Hollywood remaking an Asian genre hit, it also crowns Scorsese's long run of gangster cinema from Mean Streets onward.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about identity: how two men build selves out of lies, and how the film itself keeps you unsure who is who.
