1978 · Directed by Michael Cimino · 183 min
In a Pennsylvania steel town, a close circle of friends works, drinks, hunts and prepares for a wedding, with the Vietnam War waiting just beyond their world. The film is a long, patient study of friendship, ritual and what a community expects of its young men.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the late New Hollywood and of the Vietnam cycle, it moved the war from protest and satire into the language of personal, communal grief, and set the template for the veteran dramas that followed.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about a community and its rituals, with the war as the force that tests them.
