Batman, Lieutenant Gordon and the new district attorney Harvey Dent are close to breaking the organised crime that has gripped Gotham. Then a masked criminal with no visible motive begins to make the city's order look fragile. A superhero story staged as a large-scale crime thriller.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining blockbuster of the 2000s, it moved the superhero film toward the tone and structure of urban crime cinema and made large-format filming a mainstream event.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a crime thriller about a whole city and its institutions, with the costumed hero as one pressure among several.
