Drama · War
Austrian (Die Fälscher)
2007 · Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky · 98 min
A skilled Jewish forger is taken from one concentration camp to another and put to work in a secret workshop where prisoners must produce flawless foreign currency for the Nazi regime. The film is a tense, morally tangled drama about what it costs to stay alive.
Why it matters in cinema history
A leading example of the post-Schindler's List wave of German-language films confronting the Nazi past from the perspective of its victims. It widened the Holocaust film beyond the death-camp image to a story of coerced complicity.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of how a person's skill becomes both protection and a trap.
