In 1971, a family moves into an isolated Rhode Island farmhouse and soon senses that something in it does not want them there. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren are called in. A sincere, slow-building haunted-house story presented as a true case.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining horror film of the 2010s: it brought the 1970s haunted-house and possession tradition back into the multiplex and set the template for the modern shared horror universe.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study in suspense: how a director makes you afraid of empty space before anything appears.
