American
1998 · Directed by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen · 117 min
A Los Angeles drifter who wants nothing more than bowling, rugs and White Russians is mistaken for a millionaire with the same name. A wrongly aimed act of violence drags him into a sprawl of eccentric schemers. A shaggy, quotable comedy built on a classic detective frame.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1990s American independent-minded comedy and a landmark of the cult movie, whose reputation was made over years on video and in repertory screenings rather than on opening weekend.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a detective story whose hero is the least qualified man in Los Angeles, and let the genre shape every joke.
