A sleepless orphan in a London orphanage is carried off in the night by an enormous stranger who moves through the world unseen. Spielberg adapts Roald Dahl's children's book as a gentle, visually inventive fantasy about friendship, fear and being small.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late entry in Spielberg's tradition of childhood wonder films that began with E.T., and a showcase for how digital scale and performance capture could carry a character-driven fantasy.
Watch with intention
Watch how the film uses scale, sound and point of view to make a huge world feel threatening, then tender.
