Sweden, in the 1910s. A poor, proud theology student falls for the daughter of a wealthy family who do not want him. Written by Ingmar Bergman from the lives of his own parents, it is a patient, period-detailed study of a marriage under pressure.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late-career Bergman work in which he did not direct. It belongs to the Scandinavian art-cinema tradition of period drama and shows how his autobiographical writing was handed on to a new generation.
