Canadian (Les invasions barbares)
2003 · Directed by Denys Arcand · 99 min
A Montreal history professor is in a hospital bed, and the people he has hurt and loved gather around him. Denys Arcand revisits characters from an earlier film with a mix of sharp talk, dark humour and unexpected tenderness.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of Quebec and Canadian cinema, and a prominent example of the late-career art-house sequel, where an established filmmaker returns to old characters to take stock of a generation.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a comedy of ideas, where every joke and argument reveals what these people are avoiding saying to each other.
