Jerry and Lucy Warriner, a well-off New York couple, each suspect the other of straying and rush into divorce. While the legal clock runs down, they keep turning up in each other's new social lives, with consequences that are both embarrassing and funny.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining screwball comedy of the late 1930s, it shows the genre moving from pure farce toward behaviour and improvised, personality-driven comedy, and it helped establish the screen personas of Cary Grant and Irene Dunne.
Watch with intention
Watch this as a comedy of behaviour: the funniest moments are often in how two people react to each other, not in what they say.
