1960 · Directed by Billy Wilder · 126 min
A junior clerk at a vast New York insurance company discovers that lending his small apartment to senior executives for their private affairs is a fast route up the corporate ladder. Wilder's film moves between sharp comedy and unexpectedly sad romance, set in a world where everyone is useful to someone else.
Why it matters in cinema history
A culminating work of classical Hollywood craft that pushed the studio comedy toward a franker, more bittersweet tone, anticipating the tragicomic spirit of 1960s and 1970s American cinema.
