Travis Bickle, a sleepless young veteran, takes a night job driving a cab through a decaying New York. Over long shifts he watches the city from behind the windshield, and the film watches him, uneasy about both what he sees and how he sees it.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of the post-Vietnam, post-Watergate American cinema, it showed that a mainstream studio release could be morally ambiguous, psychologically intimate and openly disturbing.
Watch with intention
Treat the film as a study of perspective: ask constantly whose eyes you are seeing the city through, and how reliable they are.
