Drama
Iranian (طعم گيلاس)
1997 · Directed by Abbas Kiarostami · 99 min
A middle-aged man drives through the hills and construction sites around Tehran, looking for someone to do him one particular favour. Each person he approaches responds differently, and the film unfolds almost entirely through conversations inside a car.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining work of the Iranian New Wave's international breakthrough and of the modern art-house tradition of minimalist, open-ended storytelling that trusts the audience to interpret.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a series of encounters, noticing how each person's background shapes what they hear and say.
