Meaning, unpacked
Central idea
The film can be read as a study of grief as vulnerability: a person who wants contact with the lost will accept almost any offer, and the supernatural simply gives that hunger a door to walk through.
Its lasting influence
It helped confirm a market for emotionally grounded, youth-centered horror, and it opened major-studio doors for the Philippous, who followed it with Bring Her Back (2025).
The rest, in short
The group treats the hand like a drug: a high, a limit, then pressure to go past it. Mia, a near-outsider in her friend Jade's household, also wants belonging. And because the teenagers film everything, possession becomes content, and pain becomes spectacle.
The first party session is funny and communal, so you feel the temptation before you understand the cost. When Riley breaks the safety limit, sympathy moves onto the youngest character. Then Mia learns the contact she craves is unreliable, and grief itself becomes the horror.

Mia's last attempt to save Riley fails. She ends up on the wrong side of the ritual, trapped among the spirits, still reaching toward the living. It reveals that the voices she trusted were never her mother.
The last image
Mia is trapped among the spirits, reaching out toward the living world she can no longer return to.
What it says
The film is about grief as vulnerability: someone who wants contact with the lost will accept almost any offer. Mia's last choice is that hunger to hold on, and the ending makes her pay for it, which is why it feels tragic rather than shocking.
