A farm family from Iowa spends a few days at the state fair. The parents come to compete over a prize hog and a jar of mincemeat, while their grown children go looking for fun and romance. A warm, episodic portrait of rural American life in the Depression years.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film of early-sound Hollywood's rural Americana, made in the freer Pre-Code years. It shows how studios turned a popular regional novel into a Depression-era comfort picture that still has some grown-up candour.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a double portrait: the settled rhythms of adult routine set against the restless hopes of the young.
