Meaning, unpacked
Central idea
The film is about legacy: whether a hero is defined by the family and history she inherits or by what she chooses to do with them. It can be read as the saga asking the same question of itself.
What it means
Rey and Ben Solo stand together against Palpatine on Exegol, and the saga ends on Tatooine, the desert where it began. But the film is more interesting for the question underneath: is a hero defined by the family and history she inherits, or by what she chooses to do with them? Rey's identity is the central puzzle, and the answer reframes the saga's long interest in bloodlines and destiny. You could also read it as the saga asking that question of itself.
Ben's story echoes the original trilogy: a person with a dark name turns back through love, not force, and Leia's final act sets it in motion. Ordinary people across the galaxy join the last fight, so the Force and the Resistance belong to everyone, not only to Skywalkers. Voices, relics and visions of the dead keep arriving, so the past is present in the climax. The film ends on a choice, not an inheritance: on Tatooine, Rey is offered a name of her own choosing.
Why it mattered
This is the ninth and last episode of the Skywalker saga, which began with Star Wars in 1977. It is one of the largest storytelling projects ever completed in one continuing series, and a defining example of the 2010s franchise blockbuster, built on nostalgia, serial storytelling and the pressure of fan expectation.
It was also made under strain. Colin Trevorrow left in 2017, J.J. Abrams returned and wrote the script with Chris Terrio, and the release date left little time. The script moved away from several ideas in The Last Jedi, including who Rey's parents were, which sparked a long argument about whether the trilogy ever had a single plan. The film trades reflection for momentum, built as a chain of quests and rescues. That is the main reason opinions split.

Create your free spaceReviews were divided, and generally weaker than for the first film of the trilogy. Many critics praised the cast, the score and the sense of occasion, while others found the plot rushed and overloaded with callbacks. Even so, it opened huge and passed a billion dollars worldwide. It earned three Oscar nominations, for score, sound editing and visual effects, and won none.
Today it remains one of the most debated entries in the series. Admirers value the closure for Ben and Rey; critics call it reactive and overstuffed. It is often used as a case study in planning a long franchise and responding to fan reaction. Because it closed the Skywalker saga, later Star Wars films moved to new characters and eras.
What happens
Rey and Ben Solo defeat Palpatine together on Exegol, and Ben gives his life to revive her. Afterward Rey buries the Skywalker lightsabers on Tatooine and tells a stranger her name is Rey Skywalker.
The last image
On Tatooine, Rey stands in the desert where the saga began, taking a name of her own choosing.
What it says
The film asks whether a hero is defined by inherited family and history or by her own choices. Rey is Palpatine's granddaughter, yet she chooses her name. The ending closes the saga where it began, on a choice, not a bloodline.
