The Resistance is on the run from the First Order, while a young woman with a rare gift seeks out the last Jedi in the hope that he will teach her. Episode VIII mixes space-chase tension, mythic drama and a good deal of humour.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the post-2012 Disney era of Star Wars, and a prominent example of a mainstream franchise entry that sharply divided its own audience over how to continue an inherited mythology.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about inheritance: what a long-running myth means to the new characters who must carry it forward.
