In a rundown, rain-soaked country, a guide known as a Stalker leads two men, a Writer and a Professor, through the Zone, a forbidden area where ordinary rules no longer seem to hold. At its heart is a Room said to grant a person's deepest wish. It is a slow, philosophical journey rather than an adventure.
Why it matters in cinema history
A central work of late Soviet art cinema and of philosophical science fiction, it stands beside Solaris as Tarkovsky's most influential statement on belief and the unseen.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a journey whose real terrain is the three men's beliefs, not the landscape they cross.
