Kansas, 1928. Two high-school sweethearts, Deanie and Bud, are drawn to each other while a town, two families and a strict code of respectability tell them what their feelings are allowed to mean. A teenage romance told as a serious, emotionally exposed drama.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of late-Classical Hollywood melodrama opening up to adult subjects, and a key film in the youth-and-repression cycle that led towards the more openly rebellious cinema of the later 1960s.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about how a community's rules about love and money get inside two young people's heads.
