Japanese (千と千尋の神隠し)
2001 · Directed by Hayao Miyazaki · 125 min
A sulky ten-year-old, travelling with her parents to a new home, stumbles into a world where spirits and gods come to bathe and rest. To find her way back, she must take work in a bathhouse run by a formidable witch. The tone is dreamlike, funny and sometimes unsettling.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of hand-drawn feature animation at the point when computer animation was taking over, and the work that made Studio Ghibli and Japanese animation a permanent part of world cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about a child who must learn to function in a world with rules she does not understand.
