American
1977 · Directed by William Friedkin · 122 min
Four men on the run from four different pasts end up stranded in a squalid South American village. When a nearby oil well catches fire, they are offered a way out: drive two trucks of dangerously unstable dynamite through the jungle. It is a tense, physical, unglamorous adventure.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining late New Hollywood film, and a key bridge between Clouzot's classic suspense tradition and the gritty, location-driven thrillers of the 1970s. It also marks the point where the era's director-led excess met the new blockbuster economy.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of how place, machinery and weather become the real antagonists.
