Auschwitz-Birkenau, autumn 1944. Saul, a Jewish prisoner assigned to the Sonderkommando, the unit forced to work in the gas chambers and crematoria, becomes fixed on one small, private task amid the machinery of mass murder. The film stays at his shoulder for its whole length.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 21st-century Holocaust cinema, and a landmark of the post-Béla Tarr strand of Hungarian art film. It answered the Schindler's List tradition of dramatised, wide-angle witness with an intensely subjective alternative.
