Before he becomes a smuggler legend, Han is a young hustler on a grim industrial world, dreaming of flight and of getting out. His path through the criminal underworld of the Star Wars galaxy brings him into contact with a wary mentor, a towering Wookiee, a stylish gambler and a ship that will matter.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late entry in the Star Wars saga and the second of the standalone spin-off films, it marks a moment when big franchises tried to widen their worlds beyond the central family story.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a heist-and-western adventure that happens to be set in Star Wars, and ask how it earns familiar details rather than just citing them.
