Skippy is a well-off doctor's son in a small American town whose summer is turned upside down when he befriends Sooky, a boy from the ramshackle Shantytown across the tracks. A comedy of boyhood schemes and stubborn loyalty, shot through with the economic anxiety of the Depression.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of early sound Hollywood and one of the first prestige pictures to hang its drama on a child's point of view, anticipating the child-star boom of the 1930s.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film that takes a child's point of view seriously, giving small boyhood problems real stakes.
