Mississippi, 1932. Twin brothers come home from Chicago with money and a plan to open a juke joint for their Black community in a single night. Part period drama, part music film, it slowly turns into something far more dangerous.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining recent film in the movement that uses genre to examine American history, and a reminder that large-format film and original stories can still anchor a studio release.
Watch with intention
Watch the film as a story about music and community first, and let the genre tension build out of that world.
