Boston Harbor, 1954. Two U.S. marshals cross by ferry to Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress for the criminally insane, to find a patient who has vanished from a locked room. A hurricane closes in, the staff give little away, and the investigator is already carrying memories he cannot shake.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late-career work in which Scorsese turns his cinephilia toward the horror, noir and Hitchcock traditions, and a notable example of a studio-backed auteur thriller from a franchise-dominated era.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a mood piece in the manner of 1950s B-horror and noir, noticing how every image and sound shapes unease.
