Japanese (万引き家族)
2018 · Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda · 120 min
On the edge of Tokyo, a crowded, ramshackle household gets by on a grandmother's pension, odd jobs and small thefts. One cold night the father and son bring home a child who is not theirs. The film observes their daily life closely and leaves the judging to the viewer.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 2010s world cinema about class and the family, and a late high point of the humanist strain in Japanese filmmaking that runs back to Ozu.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of how people behave inside one cramped space, where what they do for each other matters more than what they say.
