1943 · Directed by Alfred Hitchcock · 108 min
In a sunny small California town, a bored young woman is thrilled when her glamorous namesake uncle arrives for a long family visit. Hitchcock builds a thriller out of domestic routine, affectionate dialogue and a slowly spreading sense that something in the house is not quite right.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key film in Hitchcock's American period and an early example of the suburban, domestic darkness that later shaped film noir and American thrillers set in everyday places.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about two people who seem to be mirror images, and notice how often the camera pairs them.
