Kraków, 1939. Oskar Schindler, a charming German businessman and Nazi Party member, arrives in occupied Poland looking for easy profit from the war. Spielberg's three-hour, black-and-white drama follows him and the people around him through the Holocaust, based on a true story.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 1990s Hollywood prestige cinema and the benchmark for later Holocaust dramas. It showed that a studio picture could take on the subject with both seriousness and a very large audience.
