Max, just out of prison, and Lion, a drifter coming off years at sea, meet on a empty road and decide to travel east together. Max has a plan to open a car wash in Pittsburgh. The film is a slow, funny, bruised road movie about two men who need each other.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining character study of the American New Hollywood road film, it trades the rebellion of Easy Rider for a quieter question: what do two marginal men owe each other?
Watch with intention
Watch it as a duet between two opposite performance styles, where every scene tests what each man gives and withholds.
