American
2004 · Directed by James Wan · 103 min
Two strangers wake up chained at opposite ends of a filthy, derelict bathroom, with a tape recorder and a set of cruel rules from an unseen figure called Jigsaw. A claustrophobic, low-budget horror thriller that mixes a puzzle-box mystery with an ordeal of fear and gore.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of 2000s American horror: it helped start the mainstream wave of graphic, trap-driven horror, and it showed that a micro-budget independent film could found a franchise.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a stage-like two-hander: how one room, a few props and a deadline create suspense.
