In sun-baked Renaissance Verona, two wealthy families hold an old grudge that spills into the streets. Two teenagers from opposite sides meet by chance. Zeffirelli filmed Shakespeare's play with actual teenagers, real Italian locations and a physical, youthful energy.
Why it matters in cinema history
A landmark of the Shakespeare screen adaptation, it arrived at the height of 1960s youth culture and set the template for treating the play's lovers as actual adolescents.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about youth and impulse: how bodies, faces and movement carry the meaning that Shakespeare's verse also carries.
