Mexico City, 1970 and 1971. Cleo works as a live-in domestic worker for a middle-class family in the Colonia Roma neighbourhood. The film follows the household over one turbulent year, in long, quiet black-and-white takes shaped by the director's childhood memories.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of the 2010s prestige art cinema moment. It showed that a quiet, subtitled, black-and-white memory piece could reach a global streaming audience and compete for the top awards.
