In 1973 a US Air Force major comes home to Texas after seven years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. The town greets him with ceremony and gifts, but he returns to a family and a country that have moved on without him. A hard, quiet 1970s thriller.
Why it matters in cinema history
A key entry in New Hollywood's post-Vietnam cinema, and an early landmark of Paul Schrader's recurring study of isolated, tightly controlled men.
