A young woman with a troubled past is drawn into the Rebellion's desperate attempt to learn the secrets of the Empire's new superweapon. Set just before the first Star Wars film, it trades fairy-tale adventure for a gritty, ensemble-driven mission story.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the shared-universe blockbuster era, and the film that proved a major franchise could pivot into a different genre, the men-on-a-mission war picture, without losing its identity.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a war film wearing Star Wars clothes, and notice how it borrows the original's world while changing its moral temperature.
