Italian (Rocco e i suoi fratelli)
1960 · Directed by Luchino Visconti · 178 min
A widow and her five sons leave the poor south of Italy for Milan, hoping for work, shelter and a new start. The city offers factory jobs, boxing gyms and new loves, and each brother answers it differently, testing the bonds that brought them north.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late, ambitious film in the Neorealist line that reaches for the scale of the nineteenth-century novel, and a landmark portrait of postwar Italian migration and class.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a novel in five chapters, where each brother's section changes who the film asks you to understand.
