A small-town sheriff jails a killer, and the prisoner's rich brother soon fills the town with hired guns. With few people he can count on, the sheriff must simply hold on. It is a western built less on action than on waiting, talk and character.
Why it matters in cinema history
A late classical western, made when the genre was turning psychological, that offers a warmer, ensemble-centred counterpoint to High Noon and a template later siege films kept returning to.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a study of competence and trust: how people who do their jobs well gradually form a group.
