2000 · Directed by Darren Aronofsky · 102 min
Four people in a Brooklyn neighbourhood by the sea chase a better life: a widow hoping for a television appearance, her son, his girlfriend and his best friend. Each dream is bound up with a craving. The film tells it in three seasons, with a restless, hyper-stylised camera.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of turn-of-the-millennium American independent cinema, and a landmark in how mainstream-adjacent film depicts addiction: through form, not just through story.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a film about desire, where the camera and soundtrack share the characters' wants as much as they observe them.
