Drama
American
1988 · Directed by Barry Levinson · 134 min
A young, money-driven car dealer learns his late father's fortune has gone elsewhere, and that he has an older brother he never knew existed. What starts as a calculated scheme becomes a long drive across America with a man who lives by rigid routines.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining late-1980s Hollywood prestige drama: a star vehicle that was also a critical and commercial triumph, and the film that fixed the movie image of the autistic savant for a generation.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a duet between two opposed acting styles, one all restless motion and the other all restraint.
