On Thanksgiving, two young girls vanish from a quiet Pennsylvania neighbourhood. While a methodical detective follows the evidence, one father decides the police are too slow. A bleak, slow-burning crime thriller about how far decent people will go when they are desperate.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining example of the grim, procedural 2010s crime thriller, descended from the 1970s paranoid thrillers and from Se7en, and an early marker of Villeneuve's rise as a major studio auteur.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about two competing ways of searching: one governed by procedure and patience, the other by love and fury.
