Japanese (もののけ姫)
1997 · Directed by Hayao Miyazaki · 134 min
In a Japan of ancient forests and early ironworking, a young warrior carries a curse from a distant village and travels west in search of its cause. What he finds is a land at war with itself, where gods, animals and people each claim the right to survive. Epic in scale, serious in tone, and hand-drawn.
Why it matters in cinema history
A defining film of Studio Ghibli and of late twentieth-century hand-drawn animation, it moved Japanese animation from children's entertainment and niche fandom toward the centre of world cinema.
Watch with intention
Watch it as a story about a conflict in which every side is partly right, and notice how the film refuses to choose.
